Never too old to learn new tricks, making a Zine.

I would like to thank Emma and her colleague Keir for an interesting and enjoyable experience at the Marine Citizen Science creative workshop on Sunday. I was a bit skeptical prior to the event however thoroughly enjoyed the zine approach that enabled me as an individual to express the “why do” citizen science question as well as taking part in the group discussion.

Emma was quick to emphasise that no one needs to be artistic and put us at ease creating a fun but also informative atmosphere for the event. I learnt a Zine is a self-made pamphlet used to tell stories and comes from the word magazine. This included brainstorming in response to research questions put by Emma, which involved lots of post it notes and chat.

How to make an eight-page zine from an A4 sheet included a bit of origami and scrap booking. Once our zines were finished, Emma treated us to lunch which was taken at the bake house and a chat overlooking Findhorn Bay.

After lunch we carried out the final reflection on our zines to see if they portrayed my views as expected, as an individual as well as from a Moray Ocean Community group perspective.

If you have not heard of the zine approach before I thoroughly recommend you take the opportunity to try this approach and perhaps join Emma at a future MOC event.
